Fuel
Auxiliary fuel: RotopaX and range planning
How far a loaded ATV goes on a tank, how much extra fuel to carry, and how to mount RotopaX-style packs safely.
Quick answer
Measure your real-world range on your machine, loaded, before you need it. Plan to turn around at one third of your fuel. A 1.75-gallon RotopaX holds 1.75 gal (RotopaX says it can be filled to about 2 gal), measures 15 x 13.5 x 3.5 in and weighs about 3.4 to 3.6 lb empty.

Know your range
Tank sizes in our database run from about 3.4 gallons (some small machines) to 6.9 gallons (CFMOTO CFORCE 1000 Overland and 800 Touring per ATV.com). Fuel use varies hugely with sand, climbing, load and throttle. Reset the trip meter at a fill-up, ride a typical loop, refill and divide. Repeat with a camping load.
Rule of thirds: one third out, one third back, one third reserve.
How to carry it
- Use an approved, sealed container (EPA/CARB-compliant where required). RotopaX lists its 1.75-gal gasoline pack as EPA/CARB compliant with a self-venting spout.
- Mount on the rack with a locking mount, not loose in a box with your stove.
- Keep fuel away from the exhaust and out of direct sun when parked.
- Gasoline weighs very roughly 6 lb per gallon (approximate; varies with blend and temperature), so two full 1.75-gal packs add about 25 lb including containers. Count it against your rack rating.
