Best satellite messengers, GPS & radios for ATV trips
Satellite communicators, PLBs, handheld and powersport GPS, GMRS radios, phone mounts and helmet intercoms for backcountry quad trips.
Quick answer
Carry three layers: offline maps, a paper map and a satellite messenger or PLB. Satellite messengers need a subscription; PLBs do not but only send SOS. GMRS radios need an FCC licence in the US.

How to choose
- Messenger vs PLB: a two-way messenger (inReach, ZOLEO) lets you text and requires a plan; a PLB is subscription-free and SOS-only.
- Radios: GMRS radios need an FCC licence (no exam); FRS does not. Confirm current rules with the FCC.
- Phone mounts: ATV vibration can harm phone camera stabilizers; read the mount maker warnings.
- Practise with any emergency device before the trip.
